What is Low Gear in a Car?

Your first gear, the low gear is a mode on automatic and manual transmissions. Shifting to low gear decreases the amount of fuel being supplied to the engine, reduces speed, and increases torque. Most drivers on Draper streets probably don’t know when to use low gear because they’re unsure of when to use it. Read on to learn about when to use down-shift and why.

When to Use Low Gear

While most cars these days feature an automatic transmission that will downshift for you, there are certain situations where even automatic drivers will want to manually shift down to first gear:

  1. Towing — Drivers of automatic cars might want to use low gear for towing a heavy load like a trailer or boat. This gives you extra engine power to safely and confidently tow. Be sure to read your owner’s manual for any speed limitations while using your low gear.
  2. Steep Inclines — If you’re driving up a steep hill, shifting to low gear will increase your torque and make it easier to drive up steep hills while putting less stress on your engine.
  3. Long Declines — Shifting to low gear on steep descentsmakes slow, brake-grinding descents much easier on your transmission.
